Hey Diddle Diddle Was Positively His Favourite!

My son turned 24 on the 7th of April.  He is now a father and many memories of him as a young child are flooding back to me.

When my eldest son was a wee one, we always read bedtime stories to him.  He never wanted to sleep in his own bed and would sneak into ours in the middle of the night.  To try to get him to stay in his own bed, I would read many stories to him.  His favourite nursery rhyme was Hey Diddle Diddle. First I would read the rhyme to him and then I would sing and then eventually hum the song to him to get him to fall asleep.  He could barely talk, but he could say the ending of each line.  It was so cute to hear him say, "To see such sport."

I have to admit, many timesI would fall asleep before he did.  He when he got older he would say, "Mom, wake up, you fell asleep again!"

This is another visual journal entry that I have created in the re-purposed book that I am giving as a gift to my my new granddaughter, who is moving with her parents to the San Francisco, USA.  The pages were first layered in acrylic paint that was wiped from my brushes as I was painting a picture celebrating her birth.

I shared my plan with you the other day:

As you can tell, I am not very good with following my plan and decided to change things a lot.

I wanted the background to be dark as night, but still have the original colours remain like Northern Lights.  I sprayed silver Distress Spray Stain through a stencil, and to my horror, it didn't turn out so well.  I wiped some of it off and when it dried though, there remained a silvery shimmer.  It made taking a photo quite difficult, but in real life, it adds a neat touch.  Sorry for the glare.

I decided to make the moon smaller and more masculine than in my plan.  The cow ended up being very small too!  To make the moon, I used a stencil and modeling paste to make the craters.  I think the moon is my favourite part of this entry.

This little stinker was a real challenge for me.  I wanted to make the dog black like our first dog Lucky and our present dog Lucy, but then all of the eyes, nose, and paws disappeared.  Thank goodness my white pen helped me to rescue the features a little bit. Now she looks a little like a bear...oh, well.  Actually, sometimes our dogs did/do remind us of a bear with their brown eyes and fur around their necks, so maybe there is a reason it turned out this way!

The dish changed a lot too, more face than dish.  I liked making the spoon with the highlights!  I am finally figuring out how to make things look a little more dimensional!  Yippee!

I have written a message to my little granddaughter that I will also read, hum and sing to her if she needs me to.  It might not be very often in person, but with Skype, I will be able to do it more often than not.

Hey Diddle Diddle was positively my eldest son's favourite nursery rhyme.  I wonder if his daughter will enjoy it as much as he did?

Happy Paint Party Friday everyone!

  13. Renée, i love that your journal spread includes part of your own life (with your son) when he was a little boy. Such a great idea. Memories like those are so precious and what a wonderful way to give them a life outside your own head (and heart). The kind of thing your granddaughter will no doubt treasure later in life. And that red bird painting. Omg... just gorgeous. xx
